Athens is the Limestone County seat, out west along 72, and it has an older core than anywhere else on this list apart from downtown Huntsville. Around the square and the university you get antebellum, late-nineteenth and early-twentieth-century houses with deep eaves, varied fascia and gutter replaced at different times over a century. Out from there, the newer subdivision growth that has followed the valley’s expansion west is modern, straight-fascia housing on wider lots.

The split decides the recommendation. On the newer edges a permanent track goes in cleanly and reads as trim. Around the square and the older streets we are more careful. Those houses want the run designed around the trim and fastened to the fascia line, and a well-built seasonal display is frequently the better answer there.

What an Athens install actually takes

Two kinds of clip on one job list, and a drive. The older houses need the clip matched per edge because no two present the same fascia; the newer ones hang quickly but sit taller than they look. Everything gets measured on site rather than quoted from an aerial photo, because in Athens the aerial photo tells you almost nothing useful about the edge.

There is commercial and civic frontage here as well: retail around the square, offices, and church and school work. All of it wants a clean permanent run rather than something rehung annually. Being the furthest town we list, Athens work gets grouped so a service call in December is a planned trip rather than an improvised one.

Seasonal lighting is sold here as a full service, never as a box of lights from a shelf. We design the display around your roofline, then install commercial-grade product cut to fit your house. Through the season, if a section goes dark, we come out and service it. After the holidays the whole display is taken down and stored until next year. It stays out of your garage, and it does not get crushed between seasons.

Your place on the calendar depends on when you book. We work through installs in booking order, and the earliest dates are taken by the first callers. For lights that are on before the first weekend of December, sign up well ahead of the season.

Permanent outdoor lighting in Athens

Permanent lighting is a slim track under the roofline. It stays up all year, and from the street it reads as trim. Keep it on warm white for an ordinary evening and on color through December. Switch to team colors for a football Saturday, or turn the lights off. The app controls it all, so nobody climbs anything.

Athens homes get one of the two systems we install. JellyFish is the name most people know, and we are an authorized dealer for it. Bosso is the alternative. It has a fixture and a control system of its own, and some rooflines are better served by it. Both are with us at the consult. You will hear which one fits your house, and if the cheaper option is right, you will hear that as well.

Athens questions we get asked

You're the furthest town on the list. If a section goes dark in December, are we waiting?
It gets handled on a grouped trip. Athens installs and service calls are scheduled together on purpose, so a drive out 72 covers several houses at once, and that's what keeps December response reasonable this far west. Call the moment something goes dark rather than waiting to see whether it comes back on, because that decides whether you land on the next trip or the one after. We're near Athens State. Is there a review process we need to clear first?
Quite possibly. There are four National Register districts here: the Courthouse Square commercial district, the Athens State College district, and the Robert Beaty and George S. Houston residential districts. National Register listing on its own doesn't restrict what you do with your own house, but Athens also has three local historic districts (Athens State College, Robert Beaty and George S. Houston) where exterior changes go to the city's Historic Preservation Commission for a Certificate of Appropriateness. Give us your street at the consult and we'll check it with the city before anything gets ordered.
We're in one of the newer subdivisions west of town, not near the square. Does any of that apply to us?
Less of it. Straight modern fascia takes a track without complication, which is the easy end of this market.
Our eaves overhang a long way. Where does the track actually sit?
Back under the overhang, which works in your favor. A deep eave gives the run somewhere to sit that's out of view from the street, so less of the channel shows in daylight than on a house with a shallow edge. It changes where the track goes, not whether it goes on.
We're in a building on the square. Roofline, or something else?
On most of the square the awning line does more than the roofline. That block is largely early-twentieth-century commercial, put up after the fires of the 1880s and 90s took what came before, and the parapets sit high, flat and a long way above eye level. On shared walls a lit roof edge reads as one continuous line and your storefront disappears into it. Lighting the awning, the transom and the entrance puts it where people are standing.
