Athens is the Limestone County seat, out west along 72, and it has an older core than anywhere else on this list apart from downtown Huntsville. Around the square and the university you get late-nineteenth and early-twentieth-century houses with deep eaves, varied fascia and gutter replaced at different times over a century. Out from there, the newer subdivision growth that has followed the valley’s expansion west is modern, straight-fascia housing on wider lots.

The split decides the recommendation. On the newer edges a permanent track goes in cleanly and reads as trim. Around the square and the older streets we are more careful — those houses want the run designed around the trim and fixed to the fascia line, and a well-built seasonal display is frequently the better answer there.

After the holidays we take it down and store it until next year, so nothing lives in your garage and nothing gets crushed between seasons.

You're the furthest town on the list. If a section goes dark in December, are we waiting?
It gets handled on a grouped trip. Athens installs and service calls are scheduled together on purpose, so a drive out 72 covers several houses at once, and that's what keeps December response reasonable this far west. Call the moment something goes dark rather than waiting to see whether it comes back on, because that decides whether you land on the next trip or the one after. We're near Athens State. Is there a review process we need to clear first?
Possibly, and it's on us to find out. There are two National Register districts here, the Courthouse Square commercial district and the one around Athens State. National Register listing on its own doesn't restrict what you do with your own house, but a local ordinance layered on top can. Give us your street at the consult and we'll check it with the city before anything gets ordered.
We're in one of the newer subdivisions west of town, not near the square. Does any of that apply to us?
Less of it. Straight modern fascia takes a track without complication, which is the easy end of this market.
Our eaves overhang a long way. Where does the track actually sit?
Back under the overhang, which works in your favor. A deep eave gives the run somewhere to sit that's out of the sightline from the street, so less of the channel shows in daylight than on a house with a shallow edge. It changes where the track goes, not whether it goes on.
We're in a building on the square. Roofline, or something else?
On most of the square the awning line does more than the roofline. That block is largely early-twentieth-century commercial, put up after the fires of the 1880s and 90s took what came before, and the parapets sit high, flat and a long way above eye level. On shared walls a lit roof edge reads as one continuous line and your storefront disappears into it. Lighting the awning, the transom and the entrance puts it where people are standing.
