Madison is the most modern housing stock we work on in the valley, and that makes it the most predictable. Most of it has gone up since the 1990s as the aerospace and defense workforce expanded west out of Huntsville: straight continuous fascia, sound seamless gutter, wide frontages, and a lot of two-story elevations with a gable over the entry. Older Madison, around the historic downtown by the railroad, is the exception and is a different job entirely.

On the newer side permanent lighting is the obvious recommendation: the fascia takes a track cleanly, it reads as trim in daylight, and one install replaces every December after it. That matters more here than in most places because people in Madison move for work. A permanent run is a feature the next owner keeps rather than a box in the garage.

After the holidays we take it down and store it until next year. Nothing lives in your garage, and the lights are never crushed between seasons.

Permanent outdoor lighting in Madison

Madison questions we get asked

We're in Madison Station near the tracks, not a new subdivision. Does any of this apply to us?
Not really. Madison Station is the exception to everything on this page. It's Queen Anne and Craftsman stock, most of it north of the tracks, and it's been a National Register district since 2006. The city also has its own Madison Station Historic Preservation Commission, which signs off on exterior changes inside the district, so we check your address against the district map before anything gets designed. The clip gets chosen edge by edge on those houses. It has more in common with the older streets in Athens than with anything out at Clift Farm.
We run a restaurant at Town Madison. When can you install without closing for a day?
Early morning or midweek, split across a few short visits if the run is long. The constraint people don't anticipate isn't your kitchen, it's the sidewalk. Town Madison is a walkable district with seating and foot traffic right up against the buildings, so the lift needs somewhere to stand that isn't your patio, and that gets worked out on the site visit. We agree on the windows before you go on the calendar, not the week of.
Three houses on our street already have this. Will ours look the same?
Probably, if you're on the same builder's plan. The run follows the roof, so identical elevations give you near-identical outlines. What varies is the color program you actually save and use.
Permanent starts at $3,000. What actually moves that number?
Linear footage first, then height and access. On a typical modern Madison two-story with a gable over the entry, you'll land above the starting figure, because that gable is out of ladder range and the newer subdivisions are laid out tight enough that lift placement has to be planned. The $3,000 is a real floor. It just describes a smaller and simpler house than most of what's here. We measure before quoting, so what you get is a number.
Our HOA has to approve exterior changes and they've never seen one of these. What do we send them?
A daylight photo, not a night one. What they're approving is a fixture on the front of a house, and the night image answers a question nobody on the committee asked. Send the daylight shot showing the channel color-matched to trim, the placement, and the fact that it can be switched off. Worth knowing that Madison has no single standard here, since each subdivision runs its own covenants, so your neighbor's approval two streets over tells you very little. Association work in Hampton Cove runs through a bigger version of the same step.
